Why hire it out

Why pay someone to build flat-pack?

Because flat-pack is mostly laminated particleboard, and the joints are where it fails: one overdriven screw strips the board or cracks a plastic cam, and the piece wobbles from the first day. We drive on a low clutch setting, pre-drill wherever an extra screw or dowel goes in, and glue drawer and back-panel joints. Anything tall gets anchored.

  • Low clutch setting, so nothing strips
  • Pre-drilled where extra screws go in
  • Glue in drawer and back-panel joints
  • Tip restraints screwed into a stud
  • Doors and drawers adjusted to run true
  • Cardboard flattened and stacked for you

Tip-over facts

Why should a dresser be anchored to the wall?

A dresser should be anchored because tip-overs injure and kill young children: the CPSC counted 234 deaths from dressers and other clothing storage units tipping over between January 2000 and April 2022, 199 of them children. Since September 1, 2023, new dressers sold in the U.S. must pass the STURDY Act stability tests, which load the drawers and simulate a child of up to 60 pounds. That rule binds the maker, not your bedroom, and older dressers predate it. A strap or steel bracket into a stud is the fix. Adhesive no-drill kits hold far less.

How it works

From a stack of boxes to a piece that stands still

1

Send the list

Send product names or links, how many pieces, and which rooms; we flag dressers, bookcases and cribs that will need anchoring.

2

Quote

We quote per piece in writing from the product details, and several pieces built in one visit share the trip.

3

Book

We agree a time that fits your building, since condo house rules often limit contractor access and working hours.

4

Build, anchor

Built on a blanket, checked square, doors and drawers adjusted, tall pieces strapped to a stud, and the boxes broken down.

Oahu homes

What changes when the furniture goes into a Honolulu condo?

In a Honolulu condo the furniture builds the same way, but the building adds rules and the wall behind the dresser may not take a wood screw. In Urban Honolulu 48 percent of homes sit in buildings of 20 or more units, per the Census American Community Survey, so a lot of assembly happens under house rules on contractor access and work hours, which associations set under HRS 514B. Anchoring is where walls differ. Drywall over studs takes the strap's screw into a stud. Concrete takes a masonry anchor. Older single-wall wood houses have no stud cavity, so the restraint goes into the board layer or the girt. We check which wall you have first.

Which furniture problems can a rebuild fix?

A rebuild fixes most wobble, sag and sticking in flat-pack furniture, because those faults usually start at a stripped screw, a cracked cam or a back panel left loose. If one of these sounds familiar, we can take it apart and put it right.

Whole frame wobbles

The thin back panel is loose or missing, and that panel is what keeps a bookcase or wardrobe square.

Screws spin in place

Driven too hard on a high clutch setting, the screw has stripped its hole in the particleboard.

Cam lock cracked

Plastic cams and twist locks crack when overdriven; a matching part from the maker beats a glued patch.

Drawers sticking

Slides fitted out of line or a drawer box racked out of square, often fixable without any new parts.

Dresser not anchored

Any dresser, bookcase or wardrobe a child could climb needs a tip restraint screwed into a stud.

Loose after a move

Particleboard joints flex when a piece is carried through a move; we retighten what still grips and glue the drawers.

Small repairs and installs around Honolulu

One visit can cover several items. These six are the ones Honolulu homes ask about most; the full list sits further down the homepage.

01

Assembly

Yes, IKEA and every other flat-pack brand: dressers, wardrobes, beds, desks, cribs and bookcases.
Most single pieces take one to four hours. A small bookcase sits at the short end; a big wardrobe with doors, drawers and hanging rails sits at the long end, and anything with many drawers takes longer than its size suggests. Several pieces in one visit add up, so we give you a rough idea of the day when we quote.
Usually. Stripped holes, cracked cams and loose back panels are the common faults, and most come right with a partial teardown, the correct part and some glue.
Yes, outdoor sets and home gym equipment too, as long as every part is in the box.
02

Anchoring and booking

Yes. Dressers made to the STURDY Act standard are harder to tip, but they still ship with a tip restraint for a reason, and anchoring stays the single most useful safety step in a child's room.
Yes, with a hammer drill and masonry anchors, once you have checked the building's house rules on drilling.
They hold far less than a cable, strap or steel bracket screwed into a stud. For a dresser or bookcase a child can reach, use the screwed kind; we can also mount the TV that so often sits on top of one.
