A cracked floor tile, a hollow one that rattles underfoot, shower grout gone crumbly or dark. Single tiles are replaced, loose ones reset, and tired joints raked out and regrouted, in Oahu bathrooms, kitchens and lanai floors.
The grout is cut out first so the broken tile is isolated, and its neighbors do not crack along with it. A hand grout saw does that. Then the tile is scored and broken out from the center toward the edges with a hammer and a narrow chisel. Slow work. The old thinset is scraped off the bed so the new tile sits flush. Power tools are overkill for a single tile, and they put the tiles next to it at risk.

The tile and grout problems that should not wait are the ones that let water through: cracked or crumbling shower grout, hollow tiles and split corner joints. The others are cosmetic for a while. Here is how each one shows itself.
Tap it with a knuckle or a screwdriver handle; a rattle means the tile has let go of its mortar bed.
A dropped pan or a hard knock; the single tile can be cut out and replaced without lifting the rest.
Shower joints that crack or powder open a path for water toward the wall behind the tile.
Cement grout that will not clean up may be holding water, and is due for a regrout or at least a seal.
Floor tiles lifting into a peak, called tenting, so the cause gets found before any tile is set back down.
Cracks where wall tile meets the tub or floor, a change of plane that takes caulk rather than grout.
Send photos of the damage, and check the garage or closet for leftover tiles from the original job; they are the best match.
On site the area is tapped tile by tile, grout condition is checked, and the quote spells out replace, reset or regrout.
Grout is sawn out, damaged tiles broken free, the bed scraped clean, and new or reset tiles laid in fresh thinset.
Joints are vacuumed and regrouted, cement grout is sealed once ready, and the change-of-plane corners are caulked last.
Cracked shower grout in Honolulu should be fixed early because water that slips through failed joints can reach the wall behind the tile, and that turns a grout job into a wall repair. Damp air does not help: lowland humidity on Oahu runs from about 60 percent on the leeward side to 80 percent on the windward side, so a wet shower wall dries slowly. Matching is the other island catch. More than 80 percent of the goods used in Hawaii are imported, nearly all through the commercial harbors, and an older tile line may simply not be stocked here anymore. Catching a crack while one tile is the problem keeps the repair small and the match easier.

If the only matching tile is the box of spares in your garage, I will say so before I cut anything out. And if I tap a shower wall and the trouble runs deeper than the grout, you will hear it from me first, written into the quote.

One visit can cover several items. These six are the ones Honolulu homes ask about most; the full list sits further down the homepage.
